Quit Smoking – Story Marlboro Man

Do you consider that smoking a Cigarette is ‘macho’ or ‘manly’?

Do you think that smoking means you are ‘cool’?

Here is Story Marlboro Man which explains how Smoking is injurious to Health and If you think any of it is true, then you are sadly mistaken. We have all been there. A start of college, one wants to be among the ‘cool’ crowd but all cool people smoke. In college, one of my batchmates –  a school topper, who had never smoked suddenly started to smoke.

This reason “Dude, all hot girls smoke. Do you want to look uncool in front of them?” was his reason. Thankfully, now he is wiser and given up smoking. I am sure everyone can relate to this kind of social perception. How did it this social construct of smoking being cool come to be? The roots of this concocted perception are traced back to advertising.

Though advertising tobacco products are banned in most countries, so was not the case a few years back. In fact, Tobacco companies were one of the largest advertisers. One such company was Phillip Morris which advertised their brand ‘Malrboro’ as a macho cigarette. The Marlboro Man was first conceived by advertising agency Leo Burnett in 1954. They featured rugged men portrayed in a variety of roles but later primarily featured a rugged cowboy or cowboys, in nature with a cigarette. The advertisements were originally conceived as a way to popularize filtered cigarettes, which at the time were considered feminine.

Story of Marlboro Man

Needless to say, they needed tough looking men who could pose as tough cowboys. And this is where things get interestingly sad. This character of a cowboy smoking in Wild Wild West came to be known as ‘Malrboro Man’. Over the years many models have come to be known as ‘Malrboro Man’. Out of these, four are noteworthy – Wayne McLaren, David McLean, Dick Hammer and Eric Lawson.

Any guesses what was so interesting about them other than that they were the ‘Malrboro Man’? The answer is pretty sad. They all died due to smoking related diseases. So there it is. Four handsome, tough men were lost to a small roll of paper. It was not the paper’s fault. It was what was inside – tobacco.

It is high time we realized that smoking kills. In no way does it make you look cool. It is the same thing as fairness creams. They have no evidence of delivering what they say they deliver. It’s high time that smokers kicked the butt because if they don’t, they might kick the bucket sooner than they think.
