Preventing Child Developmental Disorders

The preparation required to having a healthy child starts even before the time of conception – a practice that is seldom seen in India. Malnutrition in pregnant women can lead to many complications in the growth and development of a child in future. It is observed that India has a high incidence rate of Neural Tube Defect (NTD) which is one of the most common birth defects seen in children these days. Children affected by this syndrome face various health problems including learning disabilities. Although, studies have proved that consumption of food rich in folate and multi-vitamin supplement rich in folic acid have chances of lowering NTD births, the awareness level of the significance of its intake is still low in our country.

As a parent, every stage of your child’s growth and development becomes important. The first word uttered by your child becomes the most cherished than any other word said after that. The various milestones that your child reaches, whether physical or emotional, become dear to you. Some normal developmental milestones in a child are:

Looking at faces: 1 to 4 weeks
Complete head control: by 5 months
Walks alone with support: 10 to 18 months
Puts at least two words together: 1.5 to 2 yrs.
Talks well in sentences: 3 to 4 yrs

However, just like how each of these moments are cherished, it is also very crucial for the parents to observe and understand if your child shows any delay in accomplishing such milestones. Early recognition of any such developmental delays in a child’s physical, emotional, social, or behavioural characters can provide the child with timely health services thereby preventing them from becoming a more complicated disorder later in life.

According to a report published by the Indian Council of Medical Research, the rate of psychiatric disorders in India between the age group of 4 to 16 is about 12%. Since most of these disorders, termed as CAMD (Child and Adolescent Mental Disorders), usually manifests during the formative stages of life, care has to be given in starting the life of a child healthily.

AllizHealth is in the space of preventive care and hence wish to highlight the importance of regular health screening for your child. Since medical symptoms of any developmental lag are not evident unless examined by a specialist, we believe that such routinely performed check-up can lead to early intervention of any such syndrome.
