There are many Special days celebrated for Women. Whenever we celebrate such special days, the very first thing comes to our mind is “Women Empowerment”. Then the whole agenda of the discussion revolves around “Gender Equality & Women’s Rights, but we do not realize that Women Empowerment Mission is incomplete unless special Consideration is given to “Women’s Health”.
A Woman will be empowered only when she is healthy and fit to take her own Decisions.
Men & Women are not equal naturally. Women are more vulnerable to some Diseases than Men. Every 2nd woman is suffering from some health problems which sometimes she is not aware of. Such prolonged condition then leads to critical health problems. Mostly women ignore early symptoms of these health issues. When they realize the severity of the issue, problem has already become too critical to control. It is always better to diagnose the health issue at its early stage to reduce its risk.
On this ‘International Day of Action for Women’s Health’, Let us discuss about 5 most Common Women’s Health issues so that we can identify it and diagnose it effectively before it become incurable .
Obesity increases the risk of many diseases. Adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater are classified as obese, but different measures are used for children and teenagers. More than 23% of women in Urban India are obese.
Chronic conditions and diseases associated with obesity include diabetes, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease, stroke, some cancers and sleep apnea.
Fat is deposited on our bodies when the energy (kilojoules) we consume from food and drink is greater than the energy used in activities and at rest. Small imbalances over long periods of time can cause you to become overweight or obese.

2. Breast Cancer
Breast Cancer is the most common cancer occurs in Female. It is the Unwanted & uncontrolled growth in breast Tissue. It accounts for 27% of all cancers in Women.
- A lump or thickening in the breast or under the arm>
- Dimpling on the breast skin resembling the texture of an orange
- A change in the contours of the breast, such as one being higher than the other
- A sore or ulcer on the skin of the breast that does not heal
- A breast lump or thickening that feels different from the surrounding tissue
- Bloody discharge from the nipple
- Change in the size or shape of a breast
- Changes to the skin over the breast, such as dimpling
- Inverted nipple
- Peeling, scaling or flaking of the nipple or breast skin
- Redness or pitting of the skin over your breast, like the skin of an orange.
Treatment depends on the type & stage of Cancer. Usually treatment includes Chemotherapy, Radiation, hormone therapy and surgery.
3. Cervical Cancer
Abnormal Cell Growth on Cervix causes the Cervical Cancer. It accounts for 22.86% of all cancer cases in women and 12% of all cancer cases in both men and women. In its early stages, cervical cancer does not cause any symptoms. Once it begins to spread, it may cause a
- blood-tinged or discolored vaginal discharge
- spotting after intercourse
- Abnormal bleeding.
These symptoms aren’t unique to cervical cancer and can occur with many disorders of the female reproductive tract. More advanced stages of cervical cancer can cause
- Pelvic pain
- Appetite loss
- Weight loss
Chemotherapy and Surgery.
Poly-cystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
Poly-cystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common condition that affects how a woman’s ovaries work. It causes infertility in Women. 18% of women in India suffer from PCOS. The three main features of the condition are:
- Cysts that develop in your ovaries (polycystic ovaries)
- Your ovaries do not regularly release eggs (ovulate)
- Having high levels of “male hormones” called androgens in your body You will usually be diagnosed with PCOS if you have at least two of these features.
